In previous articles, we have seen the basics of Ultrasonic cleaning technology and its advantages as well as its limitations when implemented alone. This article covers one such case study of an interesting application, “Hydraulic Housing” where using only Ultrasonic cleaning process showed it’s limitations. And therefore, it is apt to combine mainstream cleaning process along with Ultrasonic in a single system.
Hydraulic housing is one of the important components in Automobile and off-road industry. Due to complex part geometry and intricacies present, achieving cleanliness quality of these kind of housings is challenging.
To ensure the smooth operations of the automotive system, the Automobile industry laid down cleanliness standards which further determines its permissible limits in terms of millipore value or particle size. The detailed requirements of Technical cleanliness are specified in the Standards ISO 16232 and VDA 19. To accomplish the required cleanliness specification, it becomes imperative to utilize both the expertise and best-in-class technology to carry out the cleaning process.
Cleanliness Requirement:
The customer specializes in manufacturing of high-performance hydraulic components for Automotive and off-road applications supplying all over the world. Apparently, it is necessary to fulfill the given specific cleanliness requirement.
Contamination | Rust Prevention oil, dust, particles |
Process before cleaning | Machining, pre-washing |
Process after cleaning | Assembling |
Cleanliness Requirement | Millipore: 0.0280 mg/sq. cm No particle bigger than 400 µm |
Solution: Combination of Ultrasonic and Injection Flood Wash (IFW)
Here, the housing is a casting part having intersecting galleries, so the cleaning only with Ultrasonic technique alone proved insufficient. The intricate areas become a concern for ultrasonic waves to reach and remove the contamination.
To overcome this, Ecoclean offered a water-based machine “Universal 81W” with multiple cleaning, rinsing and drying stages. This technology offers a combination of cleaning processes, Injection Flood washing (IFW) with Ultrasonic (US) treatment. By implementing this combination, reachable surfaces were cleaned with Ultrasonic first followed by a high-flow rate IFW process.
During injection flood washing the fully immersed basket containing parts is subjected to strong media streams through a system of full stream jets. The cleaning medium is pushed into the working chamber at very high flow rates. Thus, a high turbulence is created within the whole working chamber. Dirty medium is emptied at the bottom of the working chamber with help of a drain pump then returned to the respective flood tank passing through a filter (either bag or a candle). Simultaneously, flood pump is also deployed in operation to flood in fresh media at high flow rate.
This is the most effective way of removing the contamination from intricate areas. In Ecoclean machines, IFW can be selected for all washing and rinsing steps. The effectiveness of the Injection Flood Washing (IFW) can further be enhanced through the use of a high-pressure pump.
To rinse away the particles from surface and to reach to the areas of internal cavities with flood washing, it is apt to configure the aqueous-based machine “Universal 81W” using the combined process of Ultrasonic cleaning.
Universal 81W – The universal “aqueous-based” solution made in India
The Universal 81W cleaning system is a low-cost, highly efficient system which, owing to its modular design, can be used for a very wide range of applications in cleaning parts. Depending on the features installed the Universal 81W is suitable not only for removing oil and emulsion from mass-produced parts but also for the fine cleaning of assembly parts. All the cleaning stages use an immersion process and aqueous media. Removal of large quantities of contamination from mass-produced parts and particles of dirt with a defined size in fine cleaning can be achieved by selecting the appropriate filtration system and other application dependent optional extras. Different types of optional equipment make it possible to use the Universal 81W cleaning system in numerous areas of metal processing
The key advantages of this machine are,
- Best Millipore results
- Low energy & low water consumption
- Low running cost
- Maintenance friendly
- Local service support
- Compact footprint
- High uptime
- Modular design
Choosing the right cleaning technology for these kinds of application helps ensure that the cleaning performance is as expected. Ecoclean has extensive experience in the field of industrial parts ultrasonic cleaning and our machines are well designed to achieve the cleaning quality effectively.
